The laboratories at the Clinical Hospital "Acibadem Sistina" are equipped with an automated vacuum transport system enabling fast transfer of research materials and lab results to all hospital departments. The importance of rapid transfer of materials to and from laboratories is reflected in overall results, while precise analysis allows for accurate diagnosis and appropriate therapy and care for the patients. The team of experts provide high quality analysis of laboratory parameters through internal and external quality control. The Diagnostics Laboratories Unit offers a complete range of services 24/7.
The Department of Clinical Biochemistry at "Acibadem Sistina" offers a wide range of routine and specialized laboratory diagnostics services for blood, urine and other body fluids. The Department provides hematological analysis by fluorescence flow cytometry as well as analysis of hormones, enzymes, degradation products, electrolytes, specific proteins, inflammatory markers, haemeostasis factors, tumor markers, markers for hepatitis A, B and C, HIV, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, rubella, herpes viruses, urine, urinary sediment and blood gas analysis, drug therapy monitoring etc.
The Department performs all analysis rapidly and efficiently, with the results being delivered directly to the operating rooms, the intensive care units and the outpatient clinics via a sophisticated laboratory and hospital program (software). Simultaneously, the Department is responsible for monitoring of the overall analysis and testing programs at the hospital.
All analytical methods are defined by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC), reviewed by the National Committee for Clinical laboratories standards (CLIA – Clinical Laboratory Improvement Standards), aligned in accordance to the criteria of World Health Organization (WHO) and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The biochemical laboratory is under regular continuous external control.
Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL)
The Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) provides the following analysis: blood type test, detection of anti-erythrocyte antibodies, cold iso agglutinins blood test, direct antiglobulin test (known as DAT or direct Coombs test), indirect antiglobulin test (IAT or indirect Coombs test). Patients treated at the hospital requiring blood component replacement therapy are provided with the necessary red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate.
Compatibility testing between the donor and the recipient (patient) is performed for each patient requiring transfusion. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is being prepared at the laboratory for patients treated by an orthopedist, dermatologist or traumatologist. The preparation is used for faster healing of soft tissue injuries or at aesthetic surgical corrections.
Ambulatory transfusion clinic
A transfusiologists conducts outpatient examinations of patients with limbs’ arteries and veins problems, bleeding or thrombosis patients; and determines therapy for patients under anticoagulant therapy - therapy scheme. Conciliar consultations in clinical transfusiology are performed at the hospital departments (shared opinion on haemeostasis and further treatment).
Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology
The task of the Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory is to detect the etiological agents that cause infections: bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.
Precise knowledge of the cause of the infection is important for the proper diagnosis of the disease. The isolated bacterial strains are tested for susceptibility to a broad spectrum of antimicrobials (antibiotics), which is an essential prerequisite in prescribing adequate therapy for the infection treatment.
In addition, the Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology directly participates in the monitoring and the prevention of intra-hospital infections, as well as in prevention of the current global problem of resistance to antibiotics.
The cytogenetic laboratory performs prenatal and postnatal karyotyping, chromosomal abnormalities detection, by using Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, cordocentesis and placentocentesis.
The cytology laboratory performs cervical preparations analysis by conventional Pap smear (Papanicolaou technique), fine-needle aspiration biopsy and cytology analysis of body fluids by conventional smear and citospin technique.
The Histology Laboratory at the Clinical Hospital "Acibadem Sistina", offers routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, differential staining and immunohistochemical staining techniques in screening of monoclonal antibodies. Immunohistochemical analysis is performed automatically on AST Link 48 and PT Link (DAKO Denmark) apparatus. The laboratory provides genetic and molecular studies. The studies undergo internal and external quality control evaluation (NORDICQ-Denmark). The histological material is archived during a period of 20 years. The histopathology laboratory provides consultation services to patients seeking second opinion.
The Department of Clinical Pathology at "Acibadem Sistina" is a regional leader in the introduction of the latest test methods. The Department of Clinical pathology collaborates with the remaining departments at the hospital by which a multidisciplinary approach to diagnostics is enabled.
