DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT SERVICES:

Crohn's disease is a chronic disease that is characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the entire digestive canal. Although it can create ulcers anywhere along the digestive tract, from the mouth down to the anus, it most typically targets the end of the small intestine, or the large intestines. It is a long-term (chronic) disease, but it is treatable.

How is Crohn's Disease Diagnosed?

The disease may be diagnosed with the help of medical history, physical exam, laboratory tests and imaging studies conducted on the small and large intestines. It is important that a scatological investigation and blood tests are conducted in a laboratory environment. Large intestine and the end of small intestine may be imaged in detail by means of the colonoscopy procedure, using an optical and flexible tool.  As stomach-intestinal canal is not sensitive to biopsy, parts can be taken from the diseased areas without the patient feeling anything. Examining these parts pathologically under a microscope enables diagnosing the disease. Radiological examination of the small intestine, computerized tomography of the abdominal cavity and magnetic resonance (MR) are among other examinations that can help with the diagnosis.

How is Crohn's Disease Treated?

Treatment to be followed for Crohn's disease is determined based on the severity and involvement of the disease (small intestine, large intestine, anus, etc.). Treatment is generally initiated with oral medication and rectal enema/suppositories.

New treatment protocols used in international studies are implemented meticulously at Crohn's and Colitis Centers of Acıbadem Hospitals Group.
